Producer/Sub-Editor - Casual Position

Australian Associated Press is Australia’s national news agency, providing news, images and multi-media solutions to the media, government, and commercial organisations.

We have an exciting opportunity for talented and energetic producers/sub editors to join our focused and driven team to work at AAP’s office in Rhodes. This is a casual role and will involve rotating shifts.  Your main responsibility is to manage the workflow relating to the production output of content. You will also oversee copy editing processes while ensuring a high level of quality and timely transmission of stories on the AAP news wires.

Successful candidates will be energetic professionals with sound news judgment, possess good general knowledge, have an eye for detail and can produce concise, well-angled copy.

Account Manager - Medianet

Office Manager - Part-time Position

Australian Associated Press is seeking an Administrator with exceptional organisational skills to join its busy Auckland offices.

You will be a key member of this small management team and enjoy a busy and varied role supporting a large team of media professionals across two offices. The role is predominantly Ellerslie based at our Pagemasters NZ office however a few visits to our Symonds Street office each month. Your own reliable transport will be essential to travel between offices when required (parking is provided in both locations and mileage for travel between the two offices is reimbursed).

Amongst your key responsibilities, you will be providing administrative support to more than 50 staff in the Ellerslie office and a small management team in the city, as well as a few employees who work remotely throughout New Zealand.  You will manage  a multitude of tasks including general office co-ordination, staff rostering, basic HR functions (with the support of the HR team in our Sydney Head Office), basic payroll and accounts administration, health and safety functions, general housekeeping, office inspections, supply purchasing and assisting with presentations and arranging functions, along with other ad-hoc projects.

To be successful you will possess superb interpersonal skills, good knowledge of Microsoft Office, computer savviness to resolve basic IT issues, solid working knowledge of current employment law for HR and payroll and be efficient and organised enough to work self-directed.

The position offered is 20 hours per week, although some flexibility across days and hours may be negotiated for the right candidate.

Senior Accountant

We require a Senior Accountant to join the Finance team. Reporting to the Group Financial Controller, this role is responsible for the preparation and interpretation of management accounts, financial information, budgets, forecasts and to provide decision support to stakeholders.

Some of the key responsibilities of this role include:

Management accounting
» Management and production of financial accounts
» Monitor, analyse and comment on month end results
» Oversee, prepare and review GL reconciliations on a monthly basis
» Ensure monthly budget variances and interpretation of financial results are investigated
» Assist the Financial Controller with preparation of the Group board reporting packs

Planning, Analysis and Reporting
» Management and preparation of annual budget and forecasts in line with deadlines set by the Financial Controller

The successful candidate will possess:
» Strong technical and accounting skills

» Ability to maintain confidentiality and maintain high quality of management information and integrity of all reporting information
» Tertiary qualified in Accounting, Business or Commerce

» At least 5 years’ experience in previous management/financial accounting role with a strong
understanding of general ledger functions, month-end/year-end close process, tax compliance, audit, budgeting and forecasting.
» Proven experience with presenting information, variance commentaries and recommendations to management.

We have a rare and exciting opportunity for a professional Account Manager to join our client focused and driven team to help grow AAP’s business in Australia and New Zealand. 

Reporting to the Sales Manager, you will be responsible for the retention and growth of AAP’s News and media client base. You will have the opportunity to deal with well-established and iconic media clients as well as grow the channel by bringing on new business in this growing sector. The ability to become an expert in our evolving product range will be key to this role.

Your duties will include, amongst others, building and maintaining important, long standing client relationships, establishing brand new clients, product presentations, and contract negotiations. You will be a willing contributor and problem solver. You are also motivated by your ability to uncover and convert new business opportunities in a high potential market as well as clients and markets new to AAP.

AAP Cadet Program

AAP offers a comprehensive cadet training program, which takes successful applicants through the crucial fast-filing procedures specific to news agency work, as well as multi-media skills and shorthand.

The Sydney-based program draws on the combined experiences of senior Editorial staff, in a series of lectures, practical work and field trips.

Cadets are shown how to write fast and tight, keeping in mind AAP's constant and intense time pressures in getting the story out first. Our main Editorial principle - accuracy and speed, but accuracy above speed - is reinforced.

The program also features training in court reportage, legal issues and filing technologies and there is a particular focus on multi-media, with AAP reporters now expected to file not only fast-moving text but also images, audio and video.

During the year, cadets will be rotated through all disclipines at AAP - including general reporting, sport, finance, politics and courts.

Underpinning the program are intensive weekly lessons in teeline shorthand, in which cadets must achieve 120 words per minute to graduate.


Competition for the few cadet spaces is fierce, and the standard of applicants exceptional.

AAP looks for cadets with a keen interest in hard news, from finance to politics, and lighter news too, such as entertainment and general human interest.

To demonstrate enthusiasm and competency, the applicant should be able to present a good body of published work, particularly that which demonstrates aptitude with hard news, and which shows some involvement in breaking news. The work should ideally include that accepted by mainstream publications and/or broadcasters and even online services.

A curriculum vitae should also show evidence the applicant is a self-starter. A history of intern placements or work experience at a range of respected media organisations and a current driver's licence is a requisite.

Internships at AAP

AAP offers a limited number of internship placements to final-year students of university journalism degree courses.

The internships are one single placement of five consecutive days, in the reporting bureau of the candidate’s home city.

They are designed for final-year journalism university students who seriously intend a career in journalism, so the student can experience some of the realities of a fast-paced, breaking-news environment.

Eligible interns should demonstrate a keen interest in and knowledge of news and current affairs.

Assessments of an intern’s work during the placement can count towards an application for an AAP cadetship, positions that are fiercely contested every year.

Please note that due to high demand, placements are not available for secondary school students or to graduates of university journalism degree courses.

AAP dress code is business attire or smart casual but precludes denim.

Eligible students seeking a placement must apply in writing to the email address below, attaching a letter of recommendation from their course advisor.

Additionally, the student must attach the Certificate of Currency (otherwise known as Certificate of Insurance), outlining the university’s current Personal Accident Insurance policy details.

For the avoidance of doubt, this is a bona fide document on the insurer's letterhead which shows information including policy number, the name of the university (and/or individual) insured, period of cover, territorial limits, liability limit and scope of cover.
