WHAT WAS CLAIMED

Joe Rogan made disparaging comments about Penny Wong.

OUR VERDICT

False. The audio is an AI-generated deepfake.

AAP FACTCHECK - An audio recording of Joe Rogan making disparaging comments about Australia's foreign minister is circulating online, but it's an artificial intelligence-generated deepfake.

The original video featuring the same audio is labelled as "AI-generated", and there is no evidence that the US podcaster made the comments about Senator Penny Wong.

The video, without the disclaimer, has been posted on Facebook ahead of the May 3 federal election.

"Hello TikTok! I'm Joe Rogan, and I'm excited to bring to you another edition of Swamp Creatures Uncovered," the voiceover says.

"In this episode, we have uncovered another Aussie swamp creature simply known as Penny. This swamp creature is perhaps one of the most progressive and radical left politicians Australia has ever had.

"Instrumental in the nation's same sex referendum in 2016, Penny climbed the Labor ranks using a cunning and manipulative tactic, which caused anyone who disagreed with her to be labelled homophobic and a bigot."

It also referred to Ms Wong as having a haircut reminiscent of the Brady Bunch and a "dull monotone voice that can make a ten-year-old ADHD kid hyped up on Pepsi fall asleep."

The video can be traced back to TikTok, where it is labelled "AI-generated" content by the creator.

However, this disclosure does not appear in the Facebook repost of the video.

AAP FactCheck also found no evidence of Rogan making any comments about Senator Wong.

AAP FactCheck reached out to Mr Rogan to confirm the voice is not his, but did not receive a response.
