WHAT WAS CLAIMED

Donald Trump said in a Truth Social post that he'll meet with Australian prime minister "Airbus Albanese".

OUR VERDICT

False. The post is fake.

AAP FACTCHECK - US President Donald Trump did not call the Australian prime minister "Airbus Albanese" in a social media post following their cancelled G7 meeting, despite multiple claims online.

The supposed Truth Social post imitates Mr Trump's usual style, with capital letters, exclamation marks and the MAGA hashtag, but it is a fake.

A screenshot of the supposed post appeared on social media following the recent cancellation of a planned meeting between the two leaders on the sidelines of the G7 summit.

"There are more important GLOBAL issues happening, but I will meet with Anthony "Airbus" Albanese, PM of AUSTRALIA", the supposed Truth Social post reads.

"Apparently he grew up poor & is running his country POORLY. There will be NO exemptions to the beautiful tarrifs making our country RICH! Australians must have free speech & a respected leader to MAKE AUSTRALIA GREAT AGAIN! #MAGA #Australia."

The federal opposition attempted to portray Mr Albanese as "Airbus Albo" following Labor's victory in the 2022 election, in a derogatory reference to his overseas trips.

A reverse image search shows that the same screenshot was earlier posted on X by a user who appears mainly to post satirical content about Australian politicians.

AAP FactCheck has previously debunked fake Truth Social posts from this user

While the post has similarities to an authentic Truth Social post from Mr Trump, such as the pink verified tick, the font differs from the platform's regular script.

A search of Mr Trump's Truth Social posts for the phrase "Albanese" also shows that he did not post such remarks.

There is also no record of such a post on Trump's Truth, an independent web archive of his posts on Truth Social.

There are also no media reports of any such post by Mr Trump.

Contrary to what is stated in the post, the meeting had not been rescheduled at the time of publication.
